కరోనా వైరస్ పూర్తిగా అదుపులోకి వస్తోన్న సమయంలో.. ఒమిక్రాన్‌ సబ్‌ వేరియంట్ XBB కలవరం పుట్టిస్తోంది. ఇది మరోవేవ్‌కు దారితీయొచ్చని ప్రపంచ ఆరోగ్య సంస్థ(WHO) ముఖ్య శాస్త్రవేత్త డాక్టర్ సౌమ్య స్వామినాథన్ ఆందోళన వ్యక్తం చేశారు. అభివృద్ధి చెందుతున్న దేశాల టీకా తయారీదారుల నెట్‌వర్క్‌(DCVMN) వార్షిక సాధారణ సమావేశంలో భాగంగా ఆమె మాట్లాడారు.
‘ప్రస్తుతం 300కు పైగా ఒమిక్రాన్‌ సబ్‌వేరియంట్లు ఉన్నాయి. వాటిలో ఇప్పుడు XBB ఆందోళనకు గురిచేస్తోంది. దీనికి రోగనిరోధక శక్తిని ఏమార్చే గుణం ఉంది. ఈ సబ్వేరియంట్ వల్ల కొన్ని దేశాల్లో మూడో వేవ్‌కు ఆస్కారం ఉండొచ్చు. BA.5,BA.1 ఉత్పరివర్తనాలను కూడా పరిశీలిస్తున్నాం. వైరస్ పరిణామం చెందుతున్న కొద్దీ, మరింత ఎక్కువ వ్యాప్తికి అవకాశం ఉంటుంది. అయితే ఇప్పటివరకు ఈ సబ్‌ వేరియంట్ల వల్ల వ్యాధి తీవ్రత ఎక్కువగా ఉందన్న సమాచారం మాత్రం లేదు’ అని అన్నారు.
ఆరోగ్య సంస్థ డేటా ప్రకారం.. ఇప్పటికీ ప్రతివారం 8 వేల నుంచి 9 వేల వరకు మరణాలు సంభవిస్తున్నాయి. ఈ గణాంకాలను బట్టి కరోనా పూర్తిగా కట్టడిలో ఉందని చెప్పలేమన్నారు. అన్ని జాగ్రత్తలు తీసుకోవాల్సిందేనని సూచించారు. ముఖ్యంగా మూడు డోసుల్లో వ్యాక్సిన్‌ తీసుకోవాల్సి ఉందన్నారు. ‘పూర్తి వ్యాక్సినేషన్‌ కింద మూడు డోసులు తీసుకోవాలి. రెండు డోసుల వేయించుకున్న 4-6 నెలల్లో బూస్టర్ వేయించుకోవాలి. భారత్‌తో సహా చాలా దేశాల్లో బూస్టర్ వేయించుకోవడం చాలా తక్కువగా ఉంది’ అని అన్నారు. తీవ్ర వ్యాధి లక్షణాల నుంచి రక్షణ పొందేందుకు ఇప్పటికీ టీకాలు ఉపకరిస్తున్నాయని, కరోనా కేవలం ఫ్లూ అనే భావన సరికాదని హెచ్చరించారు.

ఇదే సమావేశంలో భాగంగా సీరమ్ ఇనిస్టిట్యూట్ ఆఫ్ ఇండియా సీఈఓ అదర్ పూనావాలా మీడియాతో మాట్లాడారు. కరోనాతో ప్రజలు విసిగిపోయారని, దాని వల్ల ఏర్పడిన ఉదాసీనత వల్ల బూస్టర్ డోసులకు డిమాండ్ లేదని అన్నారు. ‘2021 డిసెంబర్ నుంచి మేం కొవిషీల్డ్ ఉత్పత్తిని నిలిపివేశాం. అప్పటికే మా వద్ద కొన్ని వందల మిలియన్ల డోసుల స్టాక్ ఉంది. వాటిలో 100 మిలియన్ల డోసుల గడువు కూడా ముగిసిపోయింది’ అని తెలిపారు.

What are the symptoms of the Omicron XBB subvariant?
Cases reported in India are so far mild, health departments have confirmed. The BQ.1 case of Pune is mild too and has a travel history of the USA. Symptoms of XBB are mostly similar to what they’ve been with Covid-19 in general, according to Prevention.com. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has earlier defined the symptoms as fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, Diarrhoea
How contagious is the Omicron XBB subvariant?
Like other strains of Omicron, XBB is thought to be very contagious. Singapore’s Ministry of Health says that XBB is “at least as transmissible as currently circulating variants” but adds that “there is no evidence that XBB causes more severe illness.” Dr Rajesh Karyakarte, dean of the BJ Medical College, part of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Consortium on Genomics, or INSACOG, said that the severity of the variant remains unknown but initial data suggest it causes mild illness.
